The British School and Voorschoten in Action

Voorschoten is frequently praised for its lovely parks, charming streets, and a strong sense of community. However, like many towns around the country, it occasionally struggles to maintain litter-free and clean public areas. In response to this, the campus of The British School of the Netherlands decided to take action and organise a community cleanup, uniting the students at the school who are striving for a change to preserve the town's natural beauty whilst fostering responsibility.

A student-led initiative with
a lasting impact

In a heartwarming demonstration of community spirit, students from the BSN were encouraged to transform a regular Tuesday afternoon in Voorschoten into an unforgettable event focusing on environmental conservation. Along with several enthusiastic parents and teachers, a total of thirty students participated in the event, making it a memorable experience for all.

Officially, this fantastic idea originated from the BSN’s lovely student ambassador team, who spent weeks working hard in planning the event, collaborating with the Voorschoten municipality, and making sure it was a huge success.

The afternoon started with the students being split up into 3 groups, each covering a different location. These included the Rosenburg walking path, the playground by Douw van der Kraplaan and the area around Hoogvliet. These strategic divisions ensured thorough coverage of key communal areas. Additionally, to add an element of fun and competition, special prizes were awarded to those who managed to find unique forms of litter such as cigarette buts, aluminium cans and plastic bottles. These efforts were rewarded with extra points, which not only made the cleanup more engaging but also highlighted the strong efforts of the participants.

Inspiring the next generation
The students' and their families' active participation was what really made this event special. Along with helping to clean, the young participants gained valuable lessons about environmental responsibility and sustainability. Their dedication and energy offered everyone hope for the future and demonstrated that even seemingly insignificant actions may have an enormous effect. Among the standout participants was a group of Year 12 students who collected the most litter and engaged in conversations about environmental sustainability. This is an example of how the students benefited from the experience.

Looking ahead
As a result of the cleanup’s success, plans have been sparked for possible future projects. The team of student ambassadors is already looking into ways to make these community cleanups a yearly occurrence, along with thinking about expanding these initiatives by working with other schools.

In addition to organising cleanups, students have also made campaigns and posters to spread awareness about sustainability throughout the BSN. These efforts are part of a larger strategy to integrate environmental education into the school’s syllabus as much as possible, ensuring that the principles of sustainability are embraced by the entire school community.

A small step with big results
The BSN's community cleanup was more than just a one-time event; it was an example of the power of collaboration and the influence of the younger generation's initiative.

The event not only made our town cleaner by collecting dozens of bags of rubbish in just a couple of hours, but it also demonstrated the school's dedication to producing responsible and thoughtful individuals who help to build a better future for everybody.
